My permanent retainer is loose... What should I do?
My permanent retainer is loose… What should I do?
The first thing you should do is call us and let us know that you have a loose wire! 707-255-4400
The second thing you should do is wear your clear retainer full time until you see us!
What should I do until my appointment?
- If the wire is pokey, you should smooth the wire. Use your finger to push the wire against your teeth or use the rounded end of a spoon. This will make the wire less annoying to your tongue.
- Place your translucent retainer over your lower teeth and permanent retainer. This will prevent your teeth from moving and protect your tongue
I can’t smooth the wire and it is bothering my tongue. What should I do?
- See Dr. Cooke as soon as possible to remove or adjust the wire.
- If your schedule does not allow this, please try to remove the wire by pulling the wire directly back into the mouth.
- Once the wire is off, please place your translucent retainer over your lower teeth and permanent retainer until you can see Dr. Cooke. This will prevent your teeth from moving and protect your tongue
I can’t smooth the wire and I can’t remove the wire. What should I do?
- Ideally, you would place your retainer over the wire until you can see us.
- If this is not possible, then please try to trim the wire with a clean nail clipper. This is a last resort to make you comfortable.
- After the wire is trimmed, please put on the translucent retainer until you can see Dr. Cooke. This will prevent your teeth from moving and protect your tongue
Is there a fee to remove the permanent retainer?
Yes! Please call the office to determine current fee!
